The city of Copenhagen elevates its public benches to raise awareness of rising sea levels

Global warming will lead to a different climate with more floods, storms and elevated water levels. City benches of the future has been places around the city of Copenhagen in order to make it visible to the Danes what the future will be like if we do not act now.

As part of a larger climate focus, the Danish broadcasting company TV 2 Denmark has launched the campaign ‘Our earth – our responsibility’, which aims to show the consequences of global warming explained with a quite surprising item; A bench.

Many Danes feel lost in the climate debate with the many figures, reports, forecasts and data. As a public service media, it is our responsibility to convey info in a way, that everybody understands. But how do you grab the Danes’ attention in a simple way and make them realize the realities – although the subject is climate?

Our point of departure is the famous and iconic Copenhagen city bench that has been a fixed inventory all over Denmark since 1888.

What is different about this bench and the regular model, however, is that it has been elevated to match what the UN considers to be a realistic rise of the sea-level in the year 2100. Or as it says on a cobber plate on the front of the bench:

Flooding will become part of our everyday life
unless we start doing something about our climate.

According to the latest UN Climate Report sea-levels are expected
to rise with up to 1 meter before 2100 if the global warming continues.

10 physical benches have been set up in on prominent addresses in Copenhagen in collaboration with the municipality of Copenhagen.
