An Unprecedented Pedestrian Crossing in Istanbul, Turkey
Over the past decade, more than 20,000 accidents resulting in death or injury have occured place at pedestrian crossings across in Turkey. In response, Tuzla Municipality of Istanbul has taken an extraordinary step by transforming the very symbol of pedestrian safety—the crosswalk—into a striking piece of public awareness design.
While pedestrian crossings exist in every corner of the world, in Turkey the reality often looks very different from developed countries where drivers habitually yield to pedestrians. Here, we more frequently encounter drivers who refuse to stop, or even collisions caused drivers who do stop being hit by others who don’t.
To draw attention to this urgent issue, Tuzla Municipality created a pedestrian crossing that doubles as a data visualization. Accident statistics from the past decade have been literally inscribed onto the asphalt, reshaping the crosswalk into a graphic chart that communicates the scale of the problem at a glance.
Developed in collaboration with Concept Advertising Agency, this one-of-a-kind project— titled “Stop at the Crosswalk, Stop the Accidents”—has captured the public’s attention and received widespread appreciation. By embedding accident data directly into the street, the design forces drivers to slow down and pay attention, transforming a routine crossing into a powerful message about safety and responsibility.Category: Public interestClient: Tuzla MunicipalityAgency: ConceptChief Creative Officer: Ufuk IşıkCreative Director/ art director: Mehmet DemirelCreative Director/ AD / copywriter: Emre GünaydınCopywriter: Erkut ÇarıkArt Director: Ayşe EserovaCreative Group Head/ Art Director: Yağız AkgünCreative Group Head/ Copywriter: Apo GürsesGraphic Designer: Özgür AkgülClient Team Director: Client Services DirectorStrategic Planner: Su SolakStrategic Planner: Şelale MısırdalıDigital Director: Emre ArısoyProduction Director: Barış DikmenPresident: Kerem ÖzkutPresident: Barış AlemdarAccount Executive: Batuhan DemircanOther credits: Communication Coordinator of Tuzla Municipality: Berke Deniz Külahçı
