Artist and photographer Valeria Duque stitches directly into printed photographs. “Apa” (meaning “water”) is a series of swimmers seen from above, where hand embroidery in DMC Mouliné thread on Artistic Velvet paper turns the surface of the water into a textured, pixel-like pattern. This is the second swimmer in the series, a 40 x 26 cm piece and part of a triptych she hopes to complete soon. Below, more of her stitched work: further pieces from “Apa”, the “Nativa” series of hand-embroidered plants such as cacao and Musa velutina, embroidered postcards, vintage seed packets and old portraits brought to life with colourful thread.
